On 3 September 2019, Johor Port Berhad (Johor Port), a member of MMC Group, collaborated with Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang (MPPG) to organise an environmental awareness programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kota Masai 2 (SKKM 2) in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

The programme aimed at raising awareness and educating school students about the importance of river care, received an overwhelming participation of 155 students and teachers. Also present at the programme were Puan Siti Zaleha Mohd Ghazali, Assistant Health Officer (Environment) of MPPG, En Norhisam Jamalodin, Assistant Principal of Co-curricular Activities of SKKM 2 and volunteers from Johor Port.

Two main activities were carried out during the environmental programme; a half-day workshop with school students and Effective Microorganism (EM) mud balls throwing to help cleaning up the rivers, held two weeks after the workshop. EM is a consortium of good microbes that helps to decompose sludge in the polluted river and revive the native function of aquatic ecosystem.

During the programme, Puan Zaleha conducted the workshop to give the students a better understanding on river pollution and the benefit of using EM mud balls in cleaning the waterways as well as provided hands-on experience in the making of EM mud balls. Remarkably, the students achieved to produce more than 2,000 EM mud balls at the session.  The programme concluded with EM mud balls throwing session into Sg Buluh river, one of the polluted rivers in Pasir Gudang. EM technique had been used successfully in cleaning up several rivers in Malaysia.

In future, Johor Port looks forward to focus on environmental education in order to promote environmental awareness and protection to the younger generation.
