KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 - Johor Port Bhd has welcomed a new ship to shore (STS) quay crane as it continued to improve the services and efficiency at its Container Terminal.

Built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Ltd, the new STS quay crane has a safe lifting capacity of 40.6 tonnes and is capable of handling containers over 15 rows across Post-Panamax size vessel with an outreach of up to 10 stacks high on deck.

Johor Port said the crane would be commissioned in the coming weeks and is expected to be fully operational in December 2020.

“The purchase of the new crane is a long-term investment to ensure Johor Port’s competitiveness in line with the rapid changes within the port and logistics industry and to meet the growing demands of our customers,” said Johor Port chief executive officer Md Derick Basir in a statement today.

Johor Port said the new crane was part of its refurbishment and infrastructure upgrading programme, which includes the upgrading and expansion of the container yard to 36 blocks from the current 32 blocks.
Md Derick said the new quay crane would be an addition to the existing eight quay cranes in operation at Johor Port.

“With the additional crane, we will be able to further improve on our operational productivity by delivering faster turnaround time for vessels at the Johor Port Container Terminal,” he added.
