Johor Port Bhd (JPB), a member of MMC Corp Bhd group, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia IV (Pelindo IV) that would pave the way for both parties to collaborate and share expertise, particularly in port management.

The MoU, which was signed at the Universitas Pattimura in Ambon, Indonesia; also marked the beginning of synergistic corporation that would see JPB sharing its experience and expertise in port management and operations with Pelindo IV in port training services, consultation on container and convention operations.

The MoU also covers inter port logistics services as well as a sister port partnership programme.

JPB chairman Dato' Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said in a statement that the signing was another stepping stone for both ports managed by Pelindo IV and MMC ports as these operators offer various expertise in port management.

“This collaboration serves as a catalyst that will spur the development and quality of our port operations, competencies and efficiencies alongside other international players,” he said.

Under the port training services, among the competency development programmes will include training for container and conventional terminal operations, operations of cranes and forklifts, and handling of other terminal equipment.

The training also covers port information system, port safety and security, along with emergency response, which will be conducted by JPB’s own Johor Port Skill Centre (JPSC) – an accredited Human Resources Development Fund approved trailing provider.

JPSC currently provides training to the major local ports and is also collaborating with Jabatan Kemahiran Malaysia and UPEN Negeri Johor to provide port operational and technical training to school leavers.

Under the sister port partnership programme, JPB and MMC ports are expected to jointly develop marketing activities with Pelindo IV ports to enhance feeder service to the Eastern Indonesia region.

The MoU was signed by Pelindo IV MD Doso Agung and JPB CEO Shahrull Allam Shah Abdul Halim on Feb 8, 2017.

Witnessing the signing ceremony and representing Indonesian President Joko Widodo as ministers-in-attendance were Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime General Luhut Binsar Panjaitan along with Indonesian Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi.

JPB is an integrated multi-purpose port facility in southern Peninsular Malaysia, providing port services to meet the individual needs of its customer.

Commencing operation in 1977 as the original southern gateway multipurpose port in Malaysia, it currently operates a total area of 404.67ha, 267.09ha of which are designated as free zone.

Pelindo IV, on the other hand, was established to manage commercial ports demarcated to be under its umbrella in the eastern part of Indonesia as well as being the activator to boost economic growth in central and eastern Indonesia.
